As you may or may not know. I totally love shooting with natural light. The current season poses a few challenges in that regard though. In the Winter here it isn't very bright out on most days and it gets dark pretty soon too. So what's a photographer to do? Have a studio—of course ^_^
So when the lovely Eva came over to have me take some pictures of her and the weather was, well, dark, cold and wet—typical north western German Winter—I was prepared. We have a spare room that I half-converted into my little photo studio. Now here comes the new part. As I mentioned I'm in love with natural light. So shooting with studio strobes/flashes isn't necessarily my preference. So I decided to mix things up a bit. A while back one of my favorite photographers, Nadia Meli, mentioned that she uses a nifty constant light kit. Since it wasn't such a substantial investment I decided to give it a try. So how did it go?
Short answer; I love these lights. (BTW I'm so glad you mentioned these Nadia!) It brought back a bit of the feeling I have when working with natural light. Seeing how the light affects the models face and being able to capture those little moments where the expression is just right. The ways it makes the eyes look more natural, also enticed me. I also felt it put my subject more at ease. We also did some shots with just a strobe for more variety.

Deutsche Version: Öfter mal was Neues
Wie ihr vielleicht wisst, arbeite ich am liebsten mit natürlichem Licht. Aber die aktuelle Jahreszeit wirft einem da schon mal gerne Steine in den Weg. Es ist oft ein dunkel grauer Himmel den ganzen Tag über und dazu wird es auch noch vieeeel zu früh wieder Dunkel. Was kann man da als Fotograf schon machen? Ein Studio haben, natürlich ^_^
Als dann die liebe Eva vorbei gekommen ist, um Fotos machen zu lassen und das Wetter sich wieder typischerweise dunkel, kalt und nass zeigte, war ich vorbereitet. Wir haben noch einen großen Partyraum, den ich so halb zum Fotostudio umgewandelt habe. Und jetzt zu der Neuerung: wie erwähnt, liebe ich ja natürliches Licht. Also sind Studioblitze nicht direkt mein Lieblingswerkzeug. Ich habe mich also entschlossen was Neues auszuprobieren. Vor ein paar Wochen hat eine meiner Lieblingsfotografinnen, Nadia Meli, mal erwähnt, dass sie ein kleines Konstantlicht-Kit verwendet. Da es nicht die ganz große Investition war habe ich es mal ausprobiert. Und wie lief es?
Kurz gesagt; Ich liebe diese Lichter. (Nebenbei: Ich bin so froh das du die Vorgestellt hast Nadia!) Es brachte mir ein bisschen von dem Gefühl zurück mit natürlichem Licht zu arbeiten. Wieder direkt zu Sehen wie das Licht auf das Gesicht fällt, und den richtigen Moment zu erfassen wo der Ausdruck gerade ganz stark ist. Ich fand auch, dass es die Augen natürlicher wirken lässt. Auch hatte ich das Gefühl es macht das Model nicht so nervös, wie bei einem Blitzlicht. Wir haben aber auch trotzdem ein paar Einstellungen mit Blitz gemacht um mehr Abwechslung zu haben.
